LEAD IN LIPSTICK

Lipstick is most beautiful when we wear it. Everyday millions of women apply lipstick without a second thought. What many don't know is that lipstick may contain lead, the notorious metal that can cause learning, language and behavioral problems and even cancer. Lead is a neurotoxin and can be dangerous even at small doses though not all lipstick contain lead and no lipstick company lists lead as its ingredient, but the presence of lead in lipstick which is ingested and absorbed through the skin raises concern about safety of a cosmetic product that is widely popular among women.

For now consumers should take precaution to protect themselves from heavy metals exposure from lip products. Firstly you can start by using less, if you find yourself applying lipstick 14 times a day, consider cutting back. Secondly don't let children use lipstick, as their young bodies are especially vulnerable to toxic metals. Please note that the cost of the lipstick doesn’t seem to be a factor, cheap or expensive lipstick isn't a determinant of how much lead is present.

Here is a test tip you can do yourself to know if your lipstick contains lead;

STEP 1: Put some lipstick on your hand
STEP 2: Use a gold ring to scratch on the lipsticK.
STEP 3: If the lipstick colour changes to black, it means that lipstick has lead in it.

  1. Yhh I’ve seen a documentary about this on TV before. It’s really concerning. There’s the test to rub your lipstick along wax paper to see if there was lead in it, I’ve been wondering where I’d get wax paper from, this post has given me another alternative, thanks a lot….

  2. Kai… This had better not be the reason M.A.C. and Clinique stopped making my favourite colours, I’ve been using those lipsticks for ever, I hope they didn’t have lead o.
